Breville Hot Cup - Boiling Water at the Touch of a Button
★★★☆☆ Pretty Good, could be improved, very pricey
I bought this for my elderly mother, who can not safely lift a kettle of water. The idea was that she could fill it safely with cold water and obtain hot at the touch of a button. The "Hot Cup" does allow this. However, for the money, I feel it could be improved.
The unit is designed to look nice, but at the expense of some practicalities. The platform is not very large and the spout is very close to the body of the heating unit. This means that only a smallish, straight-sided container can be placed on it.
It could also have been made easier to fill. There is a relatively small space at the back of the unit, into which the cold water is poured. It is an awkward shape and makes filling a bit more tricky than necessary (a fault I find with many coffee machines/water heaters).
Also, the machine dispenses a specific amount of liquid at each boiling (250ml, enough for a regular-sized mug). This means that she has to boil it more than once to fill her (straight-sided) tea pot; in fact the tea pot then ends up filled almost to the brim, so she only does this if there is someone there to lift it for her, otherwise she has to fill a jug and transfer some of the water to the tea-pot.
Considering how expensive this item is, I would expect it to have been designed with more control over the amount of water dispensed. The product description did not make it clear that a fixed amount was dispensed each time - it should have been clear.
Overall, this is a good and useful product, which saves my mother some problems and makes tea-making much safer for her. However, the product description could have been clearer (with less emphasis on the fancy video and more on actual function!). For someone who uses a tea-bag to make standard-sized mugs of tea, it is ideal. If, like my mother and many others, you want to make a pot-full, using loose-leaf tea, or you prefer a nice big mug, then it is more of a problem, since you have to boil the unit more than once and transfer the boiled water from one container (jug) to another (tea-pot or big mug).
Considering its cost, it is rather disappointing in this respect.
I gather there is another "Hot Cup" model, which has a removable platform, allowing for more flexibility in the choice of container. It also can be adjusted, to select the quantity of hot water dispensed. However, it is prohibitively expensive. A standard model should really have these features, to be worth the price-tag.

★★★★★ Breville hot cup
I bought this product because I was fed up of waiting forever for the kettle to boil for one measley cup of tea, I can honestly say that this is the best gadget I have ever treated myself to. It's quick, effective and boiling hot, what more could you ask for?
★★★★★ I never knew what a hot cuppa was before this.
I work from home and will plough through 12 cups of coffee before noon. I bought this as I go through a kettle every six months or so, and more often than not I heat up 1/2 a kettle for one mug. This is simply perfect. What I didn't expect was to get a cup of coffee that was far hotter than I'm ever managed through a kettle. I simply love this bit of kit. 5 stars for me.

★★★★☆ Breville One Cup
We have purchased two Breville One Cups. One for ourselves and one for my elderly Mum. The BHC is really easy to use and can fill up a normal sized mug with boiling water in under 60 seconds. Like a jug kettle you can fill it up at the tap or, if you have limited mobility, with a milk bottle or small jug. Because it delivers a fixed amount of water into the mug it is not sutable for use with tea cups and small mugs. It does make more noise than a kettle but only in the last few seconds when filing the mug up with boiling water.
